Data Spaces Symposium 2026: Building the Foundations of a Sovereign Data Economy

At the Data Spaces Symposium 2026, global leaders, innovators, and policymakers came together to advance one of the most critical pillars of Europe’s digital future: data spaces.

Among the contributors, Marcello Scipioni from Fincons presented the MOSAIC initiative, highlighting its role in shaping the next generation of data-driven collaboration.

Why Data Spaces Matter

Data spaces are emerging as a cornerstone of the digital economy. They enable sovereign, interoperable, and trustworthy data sharing across industries, organizations, and borders. This approach empowers businesses and societies to unlock the full value of data while maintaining control, security, and compliance with shared standards.

As industries become increasingly interconnected, data spaces provide the infrastructure needed to move from isolated data silos to collaborative ecosystems. This shift represents a key step toward building a sustainable and competitive data economy.

A Strong Alliance Driving Change

The symposium was organized by a powerful coalition of leading organizations, including the Big Data Value Association (BDVA), the FIWARE Foundation, the Gaia-X European Association for Data and Cloud AISBL, the Gaia-X Hub Spain, the International Data Spaces Association, and the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC).

Together, these partners represent more than 1,000 organizations worldwide, spanning industry, research, policy, and innovation. Their shared mission is to promote awareness of data spaces, advance data-sharing technologies, shape common standards, and enable integration across sectors. This collective expertise ensures that data spaces evolve in a way that is both technically robust and aligned with societal values.

The Role of the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC)

A central pillar of this ecosystem is the DSSC, which plays a key role in enabling the development of common European data spaces. Funded by the European Commission under the Digital Europe Programme, the DSSC supports both public sector organizations and private companies in building sovereign data spaces.

Its work focuses on understanding the needs of emerging data space initiatives, defining common requirements and frameworks, establishing best practices, and accelerating adoption across sectors. With the combined expertise of its 12 consortium partners, the DSSC provides essential guidance on interoperability, ensuring that data spaces can function seamlessly across industries and borders.

MOSAIC’s Contribution

Within this broader landscape, MOSAIC stands as an example of how collaborative initiatives can contribute to the evolution of data spaces. By bringing together stakeholders and fostering dialogue, MOSAIC supports the development of trusted, interoperable data ecosystems aligned with European values.

Looking Ahead

The Data Spaces Symposium 2026 reinforced a clear message: data spaces are no longer a concept—they are becoming reality. Through collaboration, standardization, and a shared vision, Europe is positioning itself at the forefront of a sovereign and human-centric data economy.

Initiatives like MOSAIC, supported by strong institutional and industry partnerships, will be key to turning this vision into tangible impact.
