MOSAIC Co-Organises ICOLS 2025: Advancing Live Subtitling and Speech-to-Text Interpreting in the Age of AI

A group of around 40 participants from the ICoLS 2025 conference gathered on a staircase inside a bright building. The group includes researchers, professionals, and organisers smiling towards the camera. The setting is informal and friendly, with natural light from a large window in the background.

On July 4th, 2025, the 16th International Conference on Live Subtitling and Speech-To-Text Interpreting (ICoLS) took place in Leeds, UK, a landmark event that brought together researchers, practitioners, and industry stakeholders at the forefront of media accessibility. This year marked a significant milestone, as the conference combined the legacy of two major event series: the International Symposium on Live Subtitling (Barcelona, 2023) and the European Conference on Speech-To-Text Interpreting (Athens, 2024).

MOSAIC proudly co-organised the conference and led a dedicated panel chaired by Professor Pilar Orero (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). The session featured expert contributions from Albert Gyurica (RTVSLO), Mirko Lorenz (Deutsche Welle), and Francesc Mas (CCTV), who shared insights into MOSAIC’s ongoing work and addressed the evolving challenges and opportunities posed by the rapid integration of AI in media workflows.

The panel highlighted real-world examples of AI-driven innovation in live subtitling and speech-to-text interpreting, with a strong focus on quality, ethics, and accessibility. As AI transforms the landscape of real-time communication, the need for collaboration across research, policy, and practice becomes more urgent—and events like ICoLS are crucial spaces for this exchange.
